One-of-a-kind guitarist Pavel Steidl to light up Pyatt Hall, Feb. 10th
“Pavel is one-of-a-kind, a spectacular guitarist.” Classical Guitar Review
The Vancouver Classic Guitar Society presents one of the world’s most innovative classical guitarists, Pavel Steidl, on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, at 7 pm at Pyatt Hall in Vancouver. You’ve never heard or seen anyone play like Pavel. He has a unique ability to blend classical traditions with fresh, new ideas, in a one-of-a-kind style that has been described as ‘magical’.
You’ll hear pieces from the early Romantic era by Fernando Sor, Ferdinando Carulli and Niccolo Paganini plus modern works and Pavel’s own spellbinding composition, And You Go To Ithaca, Too? And if you are a guitarist, don’t miss Pavel teaching masterclasses on Sunday, February 11th at Barnett Hall, UBC.
Pavel Steidl, hailing from Prague, Czechia, has earned global acclaim for his mesmerizing performances. He credits his father, a plumber with a love for singing, for his deep musical intuition. “He was my first teacher. He could feel the music. His face taught me everything,” he told Guitar Magazine. Pavel himself has a very expressive physical style, often using gestures and even overtone singing to enrich the harmonies and emotional experience.
Pavel says he is most influenced by singers, “Singers, from bel canto to flamenco, were more important for me to listen to than other guitarists.” He quotes Dionisio Aguado, 19th century guitarist and composer, saying “the guitar, if it is played well, is talking“. Pavel makes it sing!
He started playing guitar as a child in a musical family and by the time he was 8, he was in a bluegrass band with his brother. He studied music with Milan Zelenka and Štěpán Rak in Prague for many years and since 2015 has taught at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, and the Conservatoire in The Hague.
Pavel is also a composer and recording artist. He tours internationally and has played in more than 40 countries. He prefers to play on original guitars from the beginning of the 19th century.
Pavel starts his five-city tour is Canada in Vancouver on Saturday, February 10th with masterclasses on Sunday, Feb. 11th from 12 noon - 5 pm at Barnett Hall, UBC School of Music. Email outreach@vancouverguitar.org if you’d like more information about participating in the masterclasses.
